The best places to spot planes in the Netherlands and Belgium

Looking for an original day out? Try plane spotting. It might sound a bit nerdy — and to be fair, it kind of is — but there’s a surprising charm in watching aircraft take off and land.

Read on and discover the most exciting spotting locations in the Netherlands and Belgium — including practical tips and personal advice.

1. AMS: Polderbaan spotting 

πŸ“Œ Coordinates: 52°20'33.9"N 4°42'26.9"E

Schiphol Airport is a Mecca for spotters in the Benelux. With six runways, it’s a true all-inclusive paradise for aviation lovers. This is the most well-known spotting location at Schiphol. Expect benches, sometimes a food truck, and an unobstructed view of the runway. Planes take off and land right in front of you.

Air traffic: Take-offs and landings on runway 36L/18R (Polderbaan), including widebodies like the B777, A350, or even the iconic A380.

View: Full, open view of the runway. No fencing.

Facilities: Food truck occasionally present.

2. BRU: Spotting platform 25L – Transit Caricole

Brussels Airport’s main spotting hub. Close to runway 25L/07R, with a raised platform and great visibility.

✈️: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Air traffic: Most commercial landings and take-offs.

View: Great views of widebodies like Emirates, Qatar, United. Morning light is perfect.

  • Benches and trash bins available.

3. AMS: IJweg (North) – Polderbaan

Prefer avoiding the crowds on sunny days? Head here instead. This lesser-known spot offers dynamic photos of aircraft just lifting off. Best accessed by bike or on foot.

✈️: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Air traffic: Take-offs and landings on the Polderbaan, closer to the rotation zone. Great for action shots.

View: Mostly unobstructed view. A metal gate may block a tiny section.

4. AMS: Kaagbaan South

Aircraft fly very low here, perfect for dramatic compositions. Quieter than Polderbaan, but equally spectacular.

View: Beautiful views, though a fence partially obstructs touchdown/rotation.

5. AMS: Buitenveldertbaan – McDonald’s

Spot planes from your car or while sipping a McFlurry. Perfect in rainy weather or for a comfortable, food-friendly outing.

A favorite among photographers thanks to lower angles and soft morning/evening light.

Parking: Park 10 min away along a busy road.

  • Very open, no shelter — but lots of activity.

11. EIN: Head runway 03 – Scherpenering

Relaxed vibe, aircraft fly right overhead. Expect Ryanair, Transavia — and maybe a military jet.

✈️: ⭐⭐⭐

Air traffic: Aircraft approach directly above you.

View: Runway partially blocked by fencing, but aircraft fly low overhead.

πŸ”: ⭐

Facilities: None, bring your own snacks.

πŸ…ΏοΈ: ⭐⭐

Parking: No official parking, roadside stopping allowed.

  • Patience is key — peak times are early morning or late afternoon.
  • Bring picnic gear and a folding chair.

12. AMS: Aalsmeerbaan – Breguetlaan

A quieter, more local spot. You’ll hear planes long before you see them — intimate and impressive.

Air traffic: Landings on runway 18L (Aalsmeerbaan), usually with southern winds.

View: Full runway view is partially obstructed by shrubs and trees. No fencing.

13. LGG: Liège-Bierset – Rue de l’Aéroport

Belgium’s cargo hub. Great for night and morning movements, especially 747s and A330 freighters.

View: Decent view, but fencing obstructs rotation visibility.

Parking: Parking here is tricky. I parked roadside, but not ideal ...

  • Ideal lens: 100–400mm.
  • Bring a step stool or stand on a grass bump.
  • Not ideal for casual daytime visits.
