100 ml rule airport

Packing your suitcase may cause quite some stress, especially when it comes to the rules regarding liquids that you can carry through security screening. After nearly two decades of strict liquid restrictions, advanced CT scanners are poised to transform the airport experience and offer passengers more freedom when packing their toiletries. In this article, you'll discover airports that have lifted the 100 ml rule.

Why 100 ml rule?

Since the terrorist plot in 2006, passengers worldwide have been subjected to the infamous 100ml rule for liquids in hand luggage. Back then, a group of terrorists attempted to create bombs in the aircraft cabin using liquids, aiming to explode 7 planes in the name of al-Qaeda.

Fortunately, these plans were intercepted, and these series of attacks never occurred. But finally, after nearly two decades of restrictions, change is coming thanks to advanced CT scanners.

New technology

The existing 2D screening technology is being replaced by new advanced 3D CT security scanners. These CT scanners create 3D images of objects in your luggage that security personnel can visually tilt and rotate to better identify the contents of your suitcase.

With these new CT scanners at various airports, carrying liquids in containers larger than 100ml is allowed. Additionally, there is no longer a need to remove these liquids from your luggage. The same goes for electronics. Laptops, phones, power banks, etc., can now remain in your bags, not only speeding up the security screening process but also reducing stress among travelers.

During the packing process, you no longer have to worry about transferring your favorite toiletries to smaller containers. You can simply bring your favorite toiletries on board the plane worry-free.

Not celebrate just yet

Pay attention: not all airports have these new CT scanners yet. So, it could certainly be that you end up at an airport where containers larger than 100 ml in your hand luggage are still not allowed.

The old rule states that the liquids you bring into the aircraft cabin must be packaged in bottles of maximum 100 ml, and those bottles must be placed in a transparent bag of maximum 1 liter. Don't be surprised at the airport and be sure to check the information regarding liquids at the airports from which you are traveling.

UPDATE:
The 100 ml liquids limit is being reintroduced! Modern airports that had phased out this rule will be required to reinstate the restriction starting in September 2024. The 3D CT security scanners turned out not to be fully ready for this transition and caused issues in some locations.

The European Commission has therefore decided to temporarily reintroduce the 100 ml rule, as safety remains the top priority at airports. Testing of the scanners will continue in order to eventually abolish this inconvenient rule in the future.

While the announcement of the end of the 100 ml rule is a step in the right direction towards a more carefree airport experience, there are still challenges to overcome. Major airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester need to upgrade their screening technologies to advanced CT scanners, which takes time and investment.

The process will be gradual, with passengers still required to follow existing rules until the new technology is fully implemented. These airports have plans to abolish the 100 ml rule soon:

  • Milano Malpensa Airport (implemented in terminal 1)
  • Madrid Barajas (only confirmed in news media)
  • Barcelona El-Prat (only confirmed in news media)
  • Berlin Airport (only confirmed in news media)
  • London Gatwick (planned in 2024)
  • London Heathrow (planned in 2024)
  • Palma de Mallorca (planned in 2024)

Smoothly through the security screening

While the end of the 100 ml rule is a long-awaited improvement, it is important for passengers to be aware of the current rules, as not all airports have these new CT scanners yet.

With these changes on the horizon, travelers can look forward to a more seamless and comfortable airport experience in the future.
